MRCP Part 2 Pass Mark: What a Scaled Score of 444 Means
Published Oct 5, 2026
MRCP(UK) Part 2 doesn't use a fixed percentage pass mark. Results are reported as a scaled score, and the pass mark is set on that scale. Here's how the Federation's own pass-marks page (https://www.thefederation.uk/examinations/guidance-and-information/pass-marks-explained) explains it.
Since the 2010/1 diet, Part 2 results have been calculated using equating, a statistical method based on Item Response Theory. It adjusts for the difficulty of each paper and the ability range of the candidates, so a result from one diet is comparable with a result from another.
Your result is an overall scaled score, which for the vast majority of candidates is a number between 200 and 800. It comes from your correct answers across both papers, adjusted for how difficult those questions were.
The pass mark applied from the 2026/1 diet is a scaled score of 444, agreed by the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Standard Setting Group. The Federation's FAQs confirm the pass mark remains 444 for Part 2 (and 450 for Part 1). Because of equating, the percentage of candidates who pass can vary slightly from one diet to the next.
Results are released online, not by post. You sign in to your My MRCP(UK) account and open Exam History, where your latest result letter can also be downloaded. Approximate release dates are listed on the Part 2 exam dates page. If your result doesn't appear, the Federation advises that an incomplete application may be the reason and to contact your College.
Study takeaway: because the pass mark sits on an equated scale rather than a fixed number of correct answers, no raw score is a guaranteed pass. Aim for consistent accuracy across every blueprint specialty instead of a target percentage on one paper.
